Nordic Spirit
This piece did start off as just a black and white ebony drawing! All I knew was that my heart was set on making a Nordic warrior man and a bear up all close and personal screaming (aka roaring) in each others faces, showing no signs of fear on the outside. I used the bear to represent my Nord as the animal is a sign of bravery and courage, as well as a sort of barbaric animal. Anyways, after creating the ebony drawing, I needed a background, as well as some color. I thought it to be difficult to show the epic emotions I wanted to express in the piece without these things. I saw a need for expressionism, which took me to practicing some speed-art in ink on brown paper with a tree branch, showing extra emotions with smearing some watered-down ink with my hand before the tree branch part. I drew the two things in the bottom gallery this way, and went to starting completely over on the main piece after experimenting. It was aggravating at first, as the proportions didn't end up exactly as I had seen in my mind. It took a lot of extra thicker outlines to make my proportions look better than before, but it all really came together when I started adding pastels. In the end, I threw my hand across the paper a few times to smear the pastel everywhere, and voila! Expressionism at its finest.
